SEJAKIDZ Level 1: Ready-Steady

Assalamu’alaikum!

Presenting…

Teaching Modules that Give Children (and Teachers) the Repeated Practice They Need to Build Confidence in Using English.

facebook_1549295684952 (1)

Soleh English Junior Adventure (SEJA) features learning activities based on catchy, short songs.  The engaging, easy-to-play, easy-to-conduct games with plenty of variations are designed to help learners expand their vocabulary, improve communication skills and enjoy using English.  They also benefit from the playful approach and repeated practice that support effective learning.  SEJAKIDZ is customized for children 5-9 years.

This module is customized for Malaysian teachers who handle English learning sessions for pre-school children.

SEJAKIDZ has three (3) levels as shown in the photo below.  Each level can be completed in the span of 3 months (ideally, once a week for 45 minutes.)  Here, I will share the content and flow for Level 1:  Ready-Steady.

Slide2

Level 1 Ready-Steady has 4 mini songs containing questions and polite expressions.  I have included 3 quick games that do not require preparation or props PLUS 5 card games that help teachers make learning session fun and effective.  Master these games and you can improvise the content to suit your teaching needs – beyond English class!

Slide3

Take a look at the class flow.  Of course, regular daily dose of good English is what we want, but once-a-week SEJAKIDZ class is still workable.  I strongly recommend that teachers use the phrases and vocabulary, sing the songs and play the games outside the allocated SEJA session.  Remember, REPETITION IS THE KEY TO MASTERY.

Slide7

Begin the class with a simple warm-up exercise that involves movement and speaking out loud.  Do a quick review of the previous lessons before introducing the new content.  Display the picture cards on the board/wall as visual aids.

Next, introduce your LESSON OF THE DAY (songs, phrases).  There are four songs in this level, with melodies familiar to everyone.

This is how I would structure a 45-minute session:

Fahamkan 3 Benda Ni Untuk Naikkan Vocabulary Anak (Otomotik Vocab Sendiri Jadi Banyak) InshaAllah 😊

Belajar bahasa ni seronok jika kena caranya. Tak kira apa jua bahasa. Kalau asyik kena hadam present tense, past tense, continues tense..alamat memanglah tension anak kita. Budak-budak, jangan paksa sumbat dengan hukum-hakam grammar lagi. Ilmu grammar ni tahap tinggi. Tahap nak susun perkataan untuk cantikkan bahasa. Memang kena berguru dan perlu gigih. Cuma, pinta saya, jangan letakkan grammar sebagai priority nombor satu. Letakkan ia di tangga seterusnya selepas TABUNG PERKATAAN anak kita mula berkembang dan beranak-pinak.

Ok, saya ada 3 pesanan.
1. Belajar English, Arab, Jepun, Turki bukan macam belajar Sains dan Matematik.

 Kelas yang ada angka dan formula, takpa boleh duduk diam, khusyuk, angguk. Sebab proses mengira, memerhati, menganalisa berlaku di minda.

 Pesan kat anak, kelas bahasa jangan buat macam ni. Tak normal kalau kelas bahasa sunyi sepi melainkan tengah buat pantomime. Mesti keluarkan suara. Mengulang, memimik, membaca dengan suara, mengalunkan lagu. Kecoh is cool!

2. Belajar ada dua saluran – masuk dan keluar, input dan output.

 Kalau nampak anak kita duduk diam baca buku, jangan rasa lega.

3. Berhenti memancing, mula menjala. (Ini pesanan jongkong emas. Mahal nilainya.)

 Kalau sebelum ni anak belajar English ‘word by word’, ubah cara sekarang juga. Contohnya, monkey, bird, hungry.

 Untuk elakkan anak jadi robot, bantu dia tangkap beberapa kalimah sekaligus (frasa atau phrase). Misalnya, “Look at the monkey!” “The blue bird.” “I’m hungry.”

 Ini namanya menjala. Tangkap dan guna 2, 3 perkataan terus. Kalau memancing, sepatah sepatah dia dapat. Lambat.

Semoga apa yang dikongsi ini memudahkan mak ayah bantu anak naikkan kosa kata English anak-anak. Cikgu bantu di sekolah, kita usahakan di rumah.

InshaAllah!

Y2-3: Rain Brochure (45-min)

20180911_120719_0001.png
Two classes combine for a weekly SEJA Session at a private school in Kuala Lumpur.  No chairs and tables can fit  a class that can accommodate fifty plus students, so they sit on the floor.  Hence, we have to design learning activities with the people, landscape, architecture, culture and environment (PLACE) in mind.  Explore the PLACE concept here.

MashaAllah, tabarakallah!  The current weather corresponds with the current unit.  I have selected two songs from ICS DVD Set – “Rain is a Blessing” and “The Helpful Spider” and expand them into listening, speaking, reading and writing activities.

These brochures are A4 papers folded into three columns.  Print them double-sided.  It’s a simple, save-the-tree effort 🙂 Amal soleh inshaAllah!

In the last unit, students practiced the “I can/ I feel” phrases.  If you have downloaded the Learning Pack, well done!  So this Rain & Spider set will be a natural continuation.

Here are the song lyrics.  For the Rain song, I selected the first stanza only for writing practice and inserted the du’a as well.

The Spider song has two stanzas.  Since the diction is quite high, let’s stick to the first one for now.

Welcome to the first brochure!  How to introduce this unit?  Talk about the weather, the rain, the sun.  Blessing is a big word yet it is easy to say it.  How would you define blessing to your young learners?  I tell them, blessings are good things from Allah.  Ask them for examples.

Practice 1:  Arrange the Words  Here, the focus is not how fast they can rearrange the lyrics.  You can choose to focus on the CAPITAL letters, the end marks, the spacing.

Energizer:  Doodling Time  Free drawing time!  No rules, no guide.  Just doodle and draw.

Practice 2:  Matching the Movement  This looks childish at a first glance.  Add a twist, take it to another level.  The mission is to switch hand.  Right-handed will use their left hands and vice versa.  Priceless moment for the children 🙂  This is the time to insert values like repetition, patience, gratitude.  You know, all the good stuff!

Practice 3:  Rhyming Rain   No explanation needed, right?  Go ahead and expand this activity.

Enrichment:  The Du’a  Put the correct signs (fathah, kasrah, dhommah, syaddah).

===================== Rain Brochure Ends====================================

You are now set for a high-impact 45-minute English class!

Mission: Asking about TIME

Activity Book:  SEJA 1

Alhamdulillah we did this lesson for a weekly class in a private school in Setia Alam, Subang Jaya and KL.  Both boys and girls enjoyed this lesson because it involves rhtyhms, movements, and of course jumping up and down.

The lesson takes a good 30-minute class duration, inclusive of Warm Up and Review of the previous class.  I stretch this lesson to two sessions with a high impact, happening game per week.

Ready to roll?  Read on.

As usual, minimal preparation needed, nothing complicated nor expensive.  Since I have extra paper plates at home, I drew the clock face on each plate (12 plates for 1 o’clock to 12 o’clock.)

Please refer to the Lesson Ideas page attached.  This is Soleh English kind of lesson plan.  Simple, minimal, straightforward inshaAllah.

More ideas here.
